Auxiliaires, grammaticalisation et transcatégorialité : Le cas des marqueurs de futur et d'injonction en maltais

Abstract : Maltese uses three markers of future and injunctive which were grammaticalised from an auxiliary verb and an interrogative phrase. They also undergo a transcategorial process and act as purpose conjunctions. Their syntactic and semantic properties show that, synchronically, they share the notion of « aim », already existing in the etymons. On the other hand, the different syntactic scales and the semes particular to each of the markers explain their polysemy and the change of category. Two different grammaticalisation chains are put forward according to the origin of the markers.
