Les pronoms logophoriques en gbaya

Abstract : After presenting the specificity of personal pronouns in Gbaya (dialect ’bodoe spoken in the north-west of CAR) and defining the main features of reported speech, I present the logophoric pronouns which in Gbaya are dedicated to co-reference (forms and main syntactic uses). Next I present the characteristics of reported speech in Gbaya (i) the key role of personal pronouns to introduce a reported speech, (ii) the marks of reported speech, (iii) the verbs introducing reported speech and (iv) the 'discordanciels'. Then I ivestigate the role of logophoric pronouns in reported speech. Outside the reported speech, the two logophoric pronouns are also used to express co-reference, but only with a noun. Moreover, using a principle of translation very common in Gbaya, these two logophoric pronouns have a different use. So the singular logophoric prounoun functions as the impersonal pronoun 'on' and the plural logophoric pronoun as a polite form. Finally I question the origin of these pronouns.
