L'Amérique Septentrionale et les Américains dans les récits de voyages et notices de dictionnaires : images et représentations françaises (1765-1789)

Abstract : America in the second half of the XVIIIth century is a foggy and distant place in the mind of the French, even better known. Is it occupied in its northern part by good or bad savages? Is it inhabited by brave colons fighting for freedom, or by lazy farmers willing to escape european turmoil? Northern America is a matter of curiosity for men of letters and sciences, who are not only french travellers but also writers of dictionaries and encyclopaedias. Since the emergence of troubles in the thirteen English colonies until the French Revolution, five travellers crossed the Atlantic ocean and wrote an account of their experiences. Conditioned by several factors, their views of American lands say as much about French norms and values as it conveys an idea of the reality of this changing place. Meanwhile in France, men of letters summarized available data about America and people living there. From one edition to an other, encyclopaedic reviews evolved ; the entry "United-Sates" finally appeared. Sometimes similar, sometimes dissimilar or even completely contradictory, these reviews reveal the existence of very diverse representations of America. This study confronts two different types of discourses : those of the travellers who had the chance to make observations by themselves ; those of men of letters who were trying to summarize and gather knowledges. It also takes into account views of Franklin and Jefferson, printed in French at the time. By considering together these different writings, one understand that America in the second half of the XVIIIth century is a matter of concern and worries. Putting aside political aspects of the American war of independence, this study focuses on the cultural and anthropological dimension of French writings on America.
