Les réflexions métalinguistiques des enfants de 4-5 ans

Abstract : Metalinguistic abilities have occupied a prominent place in the developmental literature. Today metalinguistic is an important concept in explaining the acquisition and use of language. Children second language acquisition is expanding even thanks to all those inquiries which consider metaliguistic abilities and awareness in both cognitive and didactic point of view. Observation and description of the metalinguistic world of children aged from 4 to 5 is the general aim of the present inquiry. The outcomes of pre-primary school children metalinguistic abilities are analysed considering child linguistic knowledge already acquired. Can a child form and communicate something about his/her own language knowledge? How does he/she behave during or after linguistic awareness activities proposed? Which are his/her thinking patterns? Is there a conscious understanding of language and linguistic concepts? In a class of 18 children aged 4 and 5, with a multiple linguistic biography, pedagogic activities based on language awareness and the particular linguistic relationship between children and the adult try to stimulate children to communicate metalinguistic explications and a conscious understanding of language structures and usage. The description of children linguistic world, together with their abilities and their representations, might give further possibilities of making better second language learning projects.
