Témoignages de la vie scientifique, culturelle et mondaine du Paris des Lumières. Le voyage de Paris de Barthélémy Faujas de Saint-Fond entre 1782 et 1783

Abstract : This work concerns Le voyage de Paris. Drafted by Bathélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond and present in the Departmental archives of Isère2 this text abounds in examples concrete and not sweetened about this learned and worldly sphere perceived by a man who liked going through the streets of the capital of the sciences by going of curiosities to discoveries. This very rich source makes us, on the inside, this scholars' world live in interaction. We discover it banquets, lounges, offices of curiosity or still the private experiments. In this manuscript, Faujas de Saint-Fond invites the reader in a Parisian adventure in the heart of this period so rich in ideas and in theories of all kinds. We read it a world where mix people of science and mens of letters; they discuss, discuss, feast and go through the capital of the sciences and the arts of shows in offices, auctions to academies. Faujas crosses some famous figures of this time -as Benjamin Franklin, then ambassador and member of the Academy, Buffon, then director of the Jardin du Roi, Antoine de Lavoisier- who mixes in an experiment deprived the chemistry in the electric physics, but also of numerous courtiers and even the Queen. In the course of pages, this newspaper allows us to walk together with Faujas, and to attend at all these moments, which mix the science and the society lifes. We read it the humors, the moments of melancholy and disease; we discover also how much the author is derisive and roguish, that he never misses the opportunity to underline the beauty of a girl, the stupidity of a man or the profound respect which he has for some. The examples of experiences made as long with the aim of advancing the science that in that to amuse are so numerous as the electric machines and the instruments of physical appearance are the object of a business which seems profitable and fashionable. This source appeared then as infinitely useful because it is a direct testimony of this craze for the laboratory and the experiment.
