L'apprentissage des langues étrangères après 50 ans : enquête auprès d'apprenants d'anglais et d'italien à Grenoble

Abstract : Our research belongs to the field of language didactics and it particularly focuses on the processes of learning a foreign language after the age of 50. Until now the age element in learning a foreign language has been studied in children but it has been neglected in older adult learners. Our research analyzes the difficulties of older learners, the seniors, and the consequences of aging over learning. Results were collected by means of students’ questionnaires – that were distributed in various linguistics centers in Grenoble – and teachers’ interviews. The teachers were selected for their experience with senior students. The presentation of the results will be introduced by a theoretical presentation that first describes the seniors from a social point of view, and then the main cognitive changes related to age. This research will create awareness of this new category of learners and will help teachers that work with seniors students.
