Représentation sociale de la corticothérapie de courte durée dans la population générale

Abstract : Background:Short-term corticosteroid therapy is frequently used in General Practice whereas most people are in fear of it. The aim of this study is to define the social representation of the short-term corticosteroid therapy in the population and to understand its origins. This will provide us with some useful elements to improve the observance of patients when short-term corticosteroid therapy is prescribed. Method: A qualitative study has been performed in Grenoble using five focus groups composed voluntary people over eighteen, recruited by telephone in the whole population. Results: Participants have a limited knowledge of short-term corticosteroid therapy. Social representation of this therapeutic is mainly based on the negative image of long-term corticosteroid therapy. Despite its effectiveness, short-term corticosteroid therapy causes scepticism. This could be explained by the fact doctors only give few information about it. Several participants then made the choice to use non conventional treatments such as homeopathy, naturopathy or etiopathy. Conclusion: If patients were given further information during the consultation, they would be less scared by this treatment. As a result, the therapeutic observance would be improved and a treatment correctly followed would enable a quicker and more efficiently treatment of many diseases in General practice.
