Les besoins des proches de patients en soins palliatifs à domicile : enquête auprès de quinze personnes après le décès d'un proche pris en charge par l'Hospitalisation A Domicile de Dax (Landes)‎ : juillet 2010

Abstract : Case study of fifteen persons after the death of their relatives in Dax (Landes) homecare. July 2010. Families, or primary caregivers, are crucial to the accompaniment of a person at the end of life at home. We have thus assessed their needs through semi-structured interviews with 15 persons who have accompanied patients as part of the homecare programme in Dax. According to our study, the most important needs identified by families are: the care to be provided to the dying along with symptoms relief and management of pain; the coordination of the various caregivers; and the day to day services by nurses and nursing assistants. The 24 hours a day standby duty programme is also essential to feel safe at home. Furthermore, family members must be considered as partners to the care relations at the end of life, and must therefore be involved in decisions and care if they wish to do so. As health professionals, we have to take families into consideration, as the effects of this type of care are not without consequences. They impact on their professional and personal lives as well as on their health. It is important to dedicate time to them in order to listen to their suffering and to prepare them to the death of their relative in order for them to be present until the final moments of their patients. The multidisciplinary aspect of palliative care patient and families support is crucial. The development of homecare and networks is vouched for. The training of all caregivers is also essential. And we deem a transfer of knowledge to families as highly recommended.
