Enquête de l'an XIV : prémices d'une formation organisée pour les sages-femmes

Abstract : Survey of the year XIV: First stages of a structured training for midwives. Following growing demographic concerns during the 18th century, authorities started to take an interest in the training of midwives. Legislation regarding the profession and its training is therefore passed on the 19th of ventose of year XI. The legislation aims at harmonizing the training throughout the country, providing both theoretical and clinical instruction. To this end, the hospice is designated as the place where such training will be provided in French departments. However, a survey conducted three years later highlights a fact, which hampers the implementation of that law. Since the majority of women give birth at home at the beginning of the 19th century, the hospice proves not to be the ideal place envisaged by legislators. Numerous investments become therefore necessary for the provision of this training. Whereas the law of the 19th ventose of the year XI provides a legislative framework for midwives training, the survey conducted in year XIV encourages its application. This study looks at the early factors, which led to the structured organization of the training for midwives.
