Par quels moyens est-il possible d'enseigner les conditions de vie dans les tranchées des poilus sur le front de l'Ouest durant la Première Guerre mondiale en cycle 3 ?

Abstract : The objective of this report is to teach, in Cycle 3, the First World War through the experience of French soldiers in the trenches. The first part is a theoretical. Firstly, it allows defining what could have been a war of position which was set in 1914. Then, thanks to the reproduction of combatants words, we can make teach yet and cultural history. Indeed, letters and accounts become real historical sources and allowed to study the conflict from another point of view, different from the diplomatic one. If "The Poilus" would like willing to share their experience of battle, it is particularly because they want that their sacrifice is known and that future generations do not forget what could have been the First World War. Finally, the aim is to present, through letters and accounts, the "Poilus" life in the trenches. The daily life of these men is described through several aspects such as food, hygiene, occupations, relationship to religion, weather conditions etc. The second part deals with the teaching of history. Firstly, it refers to formal programs that show the concepts to teach to pupils of Cycle 3 concerning this period. However, this report tries to fit in the new approach of teaching history. Indeed, it is not just teaching knowledge to pupils but also abilities and attitudes. This requires a question for each session and pupils have to answer by studying documents. In other words, they are actors in their own learning: That is the constructivism. A sequence of five sessions is presented. The aim is to make pupils understand that the First World War was called "Great War" because it marked a turning point in the twentieth century. During these sessions, I tried to make pupils purchase abilities especially how to say, to read and to write. Finally, this sequence was the opportunity to work more areas such as French, because each pupil has written a letter as a "Hairy", and visual arts.
