Perception et effets d'une démarche autonomisante dans un dispositif hybride d'apprentissage de l'anglais pour spécialistes d'autres disciplines

Abstract : Faced with growing student numbers and related issues, higher education often resorts to blended language learning as a means of increasing opportunities for language practice and of improving the learning experience. However, in practice, learners do not necessarily take control of their own learning in a blended learning environment, especially in the distance mode. Based on this observation, an action research study was initiated in a blended English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. An action plan for fostering learner autonomy was designed and implemented. Along with learners' perceptions, effects on online practice were evaluated, using online activity reports, a questionnaire, learning journals and follow-up interviews. Aspects of the learning environment which were particularly well received by learners were the task-based scenario and the openness of the distant mode (where learners were free to make some choices). Online learning practices vary across learners and are determined by various skills linked to linguistic, organizational, metacognitive and cognitive autonomy, as well as other factors, including motivation, learning habits, past learning experiences, and learners' beliefs about Learning and language.
