Quelle place pour la prévention du syndrome du bébé secoué dans le réseau de périnatalité Bas-Normand ? Études prospectives auprès des mères en suite de couche et auprès des sages-femmes du Réseau Bas-Normand

Abstract : Between 180 and 200 newborns suffer from the Shaken Baby Syndrome in France per year. It is defined by the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de Santé) as: a subset of inflicted or non-accidental cranial traumas, in which the shaking itself or associated with an impact causes the injuries. It occurs most of the time when the baby is under one year old. The triggering factor is the presence of incessant infant tears. This study is a prospective paper aiming at evaluating mothers knowledge about the Shaken Baby Syndrome on one hand, and midwives knowledge on the other hand. Questionnaires were handed out to hospitalized mothers after the birth of their baby and to midwives working in maternity wards in Basse Normandie. Concerning the mothers, we highlighted the fact that most of them had already heard about the Shaken Baby Syndrome through mass media, but only few of them were able to actually define what it is. About midwives, we noticed that they lacked knowledge on this subject, leading to difficulties in the prevention of the syndrome. Improving mothers knowledge by setting up an information leaflet about infant tears and midwives expertise by developing initial and in-house training, we would contribute to the prevention of this mistreatment in order to reduce its repercussions.
