De l'arithmétique non symbolique à l'arithmétique symbolique

Abstract : The triple-code model proposes three types of representations of quantities: the innate analogical representation and two symbolic representations, verbal and Arabic, which would be “grafted” on this one. Several studies have shown the existence of analogical representation but a few studies have focused on the link between analogical representation and symbolical representations. This was the purpose this research, by analyzing the children’s results in analog and symbolic magnitude comparison tasks in kindergarten and in the first year of primary school. The study of individual profiles shows that the link between analogical and symbolical dimensions is not absolute: the symbolic dimension does not depend on analogic and may lead to better results. As expected, the ratio effect is present in analogic comparisons, but only with discontinuous quantities. It also appears in the success and/or in the speed in symbolic comparisons, but the lack of significance may lead to hasty interpretations, suggesting that the establishment of the relationship between analogical and symbolical dimensions occurs during this period of development and this link is not automated yet in the first year of primary school. It would be interesting to investigate this issue further with older children in order to identify when analogic activation by symbolical codes become automatic.
