Système permettant de simuler et de contrôler les signaux émis par une chambre de projection temporelle

Abstract : The ALICE experiment (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) of the large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research), explores a primordial state of matter that existed in the earliest moments of our universe: Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). The time projection chamber (TPC) is the main sub-detector to record the trajectory of particles produced by collisions between the ions accelerated by the LHC. To improve the data acquisition system of the detector it is necessary to develop a system to simulate the particles tracks in a controlled manner and use this to stimulate the front end electronics. The aim of the project is to design a system to simulate a complete TPC sector, comprising 15448 channels. The channels are grouped by 128 and connected to the front end electronics cards. The large number of channels and the use of the real electronic in a confined space required special solutions. Techniques to reduce the size and cost while maintaining good accuracy had to be used. To simulate the detector, the system is built around a core module consisting of a pulse generator with 128 independent channels and connected to each front end electronic card. Each channel can generate an analog pulse of variable amplitude and offset relative to the reference time, all parameters are controlled digitally. The configuration of the entire system, of 121 pulser modules is through a CAN bus network and a graphical user interface residing on a PC.
