Quantification des incertitudes hydrométriques et impact sur les bilans hydrologiques : application au bassin versant de l'Yzeron (ouest Lyonnais)

Abstract : Discharge time series, used for many purposes (river and hydraulic structure management,hydrological modeling…) are uncertain data. They are obtained from stage time series using a rating curve, which is a major source of uncertainty. The objective of my internship in the Hydrology-Hydraulic department of IRSTEA Lyon was to quantify the uncertainties associated to discharge time series and study their impact onsome hydrological signatures for seven hydrometric stations of the Yzeron catchment (near Lyon, France). TheBaRatin (BAyesian RATINg curve analysis) method, combining hydraulic knowledge and gaugings, was used to estimate rating curves and associated uncertainties and propagate them to discharge time series. Uncertainties associated to discharge time series and a few hydrological signatures (mean discharge, monthly and annual run off depth, and flood duration curve) were quantified. Important uncertainties were obtained: about +/-20% formost discharge time series and as high as +/- 50% for some hydrological signatures. Some uncertainty envelopes were unrealistic, highlighting limits to the BaRatin method. The method was also found to overestimate uncertainty for hydrometric stations where only a few gaugings were available. To conclude, discharge time series uncertainties should be quantified in order to properly use this data and help interpretations and decisions whenever they are used. Some improvements of the BaRatin method are necessary and will be undertaken in the future.
