Influence de la pratique des instruments à vent sur les récidives orthodontiques

Abstract : During music practice, there's no doubt about the fact that significant muscular forces are used. The purpose of this study will be to assess the influence of the playing wind instruments on orthodontic relapses. Methods: We carried out a retrospective study on seven patients playing a wind instrument, hired through advertisements dropped in several music conservatoires located in the Aquitaine region. Their initial, post-treatment and current orthodontic data have been compared. Results: An important impact from the practice of wind instruments on the patients' muscles has been stressed by its consequence which are mostly considered positive on the post-therapy evolution of these subjects (anterior rotation for class A, improvement of intercuspidation). We have also been able to notice a vestibulo-version of maxillary incissors on nearly all patients, which recurred in post-therapy. Discussion and conclusion : The result dealing with the patients' muscles is consistent with the literature, especially with Brattström's research findings. However, owing to a reduced sample size and the lack of some documents, it seems essential to carry out a prospective study on a bigger sample to confirm the results of this study.
