Santé bucco-dentaire et besoins en soins de la personne très âgée en France

Abstract : The population of elderly people is steadily increasing. This means new challenges for dental care. There is a lack of epidemiologic data in this population. Our main objective was to describe the oral health of the elderlies (over 90 years old) living in France. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study in Gironde and Dordogne, nested in the PAQUID cohort study. We evaluated their oral care needs and habits, oral hygiene, prosthetic and dental state at participants' home. The 88 subjects had a mean number of decayed, missing or filled tooth of 22, with a mean of missing tooth of 3. 46 people had missing tooth not replaced. 53 subjects had a removable prosthesis, it was not adapted for 62%. Among 76 subjects who had teeth, 67 (86%) had dental plaque or scale. In total, 79 (89%) needed to consult a dentist while only 23 (27%) participants thought they need to. Our study showed important dental care needs ignored by the pa! rticipants. Preventive and curative strategies specific for that population are therefore necessary.
