Noyades sur le littoral océanique Girondin : étude rétrospective des conditions de noyade en 2011-2013

Abstract : Drowning is a frequent cause of accidental death in the world. In France, Gironde is a hazardous region because of rip currents, which can be encountered on the whole coast. Moreover, the Aquitanian beaches are crowded during summer. Rip current are determined by tide and wave conditions. Bathing depends on other parameters. We studied the call received on the emergency reception center (SAMU 33) from the beaches from january, 1 st 2011 till december, 31 st 2013, and compared the calls depending on whether they concerned a drowning or not. We analysed 2624 calls, including 266 consecutive to drowning. Individual conditions are similar in the two groups. A few environmental parameters are determinant for drowning. First, the wave factor (wave height times wave period) and the wave direction are crucials. The air temperature, which is probably implied in the exposure, decreases the risk when below 21°C. A wind speed above 6.1 m/s increases the risk of drowning. The period around the low tide is at risk and high tidal ranges shift the risk toward the rising tide. We then studied those parameters in a predictive model to assess the risk of drowning for a given day. It courd lead to a new approach of drowning prevention, however further work is needed to evaluate this model.
