Obstacles à la pratique de l’échographie par le médecin généraliste au cabinet : étude qualitative

Abstract : In France, current general practitioners’ practice does not often include US Scan. The aim of this study was to identify obstacles to US scan practice in general practitioners’ offices, and to understand why it was so rarely performed by them. We conducted a qualitative study in a heterogeneous group of general practitioners of Savoie and Haute-Savoie, who did or didn’t perform US Scans. We conducted personal and group interviews, after developing a semi-directive interview guide. We first transcribed the interviews. They were coded twice separately, using the rule of triangulation. We used the software N’Vivo to encode and classify the data. Obstacles such as the lack of experience in general practice, mastering US Scan technique, and the uncertain relevance of US scan in family medicine, were identified, in addition to the practitioners’ own reluctance and the legal issue created by this practice. Teaching medical student basic US Scan knowledge could bring a better understanding of the US Scan to general practitioners-to-be. It could familiarize them to the technique, allowing them to make this tool their own. It could be interesting to create a “US Scan in general practice” degree. French studies should be conducted to outline how US Scan is interesting and how it fits in general practice.
