Changer l'image de Saint-Étienne : la politique de gentrification dans les centres anciens

Abstract : This final project study presents the process of gentrification as a particular urban strategy that, in the case of the city of Saint-Étienne, can reveal a positive image change. This report defines the gentrification process and relates it to the context of Saint-Etienne, an industrial decline context. Through the identification of Saint-Étienne’s economic, urban and social difficulties, it will demonstrate how gentrification can be a global political project in response to the economic and demographic decline of the city. And thus enable erasing its image as a "loser city" in favor of a deserved dynamic and attractive city picture, considering its rich industrial past which has given it the title of "art and industry city" since the 1880s. This thinking is based on the current urban renewal project of former Saint-Étienne neighborhoods and analyzes the current and future possible consequences on these degraded lands in great poverty. Likewise, it seeks to identify cities that have the same characteristics as Saint-Étienne and experienced a significant phenomenon of gentrification.
