Le vote du soldat romain de 250 av. J.-C. à 41 ap J.-C.

Abstract : The period from 250 BC. AD, that is to say, the middle of the first Punic War to 41 AD. AD, which is the date of the assassination of the Emperor Caligula by his praetorian guards, replaced by the same soldiers by Claude, is very interesting regarding the evolution of the military is, including Soldier. The soldier knows through voting in this period some changes in its role: it is not private, it becomes a player in Roman politics through different stations and different ways to vote. We must of course understand the vote here in the broad sense of position or medium. So we find the vote, but the cheer, political assassination, caning or engagement in various camps of civil wars, as the type of position and thus as a way to vote.
It is precisely these means of expression that we need to understand and explain here to consider the political role of soldiers as something natural and normal in a society that puts on a pedestal the citizen-soldier-peasant. It is our responsibility to show that the vote of the soldier is in response and in parallel to the military unit that was created and that will lead to the creation of an informal unofficial military society sidelines and in parallel, which is based on the vote, the claims and the political aspirations of what might be called the class of soldiers. This is of course a phenomenon which at the time was not well identified, but in hindsight can be understood in this way.
In the early principate which corresponds to the end of the period of interest, we see that Augustus and his successors will try to break this military society without fully accomplish, since the soldiers will always find a way to express either by assassination or by the uprising since their traditional voting is now impossible.
