Médecins généralistes et laboratoires pharmaceutiques dans le Val-de-Marne : état des lieux et évolution de leurs relations

Abstract : Relationships with pharmaceutical firms have a negative impact on general practitioners (GPs) prescriptions. The purpose of this quantitative study is to describe the relations between GP and pharmaceutical firms in Val de Marne district, in France and to find out evidence showing an evolution in these relations. Materials and Methods: 231 GP of Val de Marne were sent an anonymous questionnaire in 2012. Results: 56% of the GP answered. 30% declared not receiving medical representatives (60% of the less than 40 years old and 44% of the more than 40 years old). The information provided by pharmaceutical firms was considered with low credibility or no credibility by half of the GP (77% of the less than 40 years old against 44% of the more than 40 years old). 76% were against a direct financing of the Continuing Medical Education by the pharmaceutical industry (86% of the less than 40 years old and 62% of the more than 40 years old). 75% of the GP declared that their relationship with pharmaceutical industry decreased during their career. Conclusion: Most of the interviewed Val de Marne GP report decreasing of their relations with pharmaceutical industry. The youngest GP receive less medical representatives than the oldest and want to be more independent. However, the influence of pharmaceutical industry seems to remain but under various aspects. A bigger comparative study could prove a real decrease of the relations between pharmaceutical industry and general practitioners.
