L'image du Barbare dans l’enseignement de l’Histoire à l’école primaire : entre mythe et réalité

Abstract : Conan, Attila, Thor and many other names allude to terrible barbarians. The representation of a bloodthirsty and greedy warrior is still fixed in popular belief despite archaeological advances. Which image is conveying through history lessons taught in primary school? We can see that the teaching gives a partial approach of the barbaric populations. How can we change the pupils’ representations? Our approach involved bringing about a face-to-face confrontation between the pupils and Barbarians by using a medieval company. We focused on young people in years 4 and 5 and sought to change their preconceived ideas about this culture. To evaluate the relevance of this encounter, we did a comparative study with the significance of a traditional classroom lesson. This interactive experience allowed the pupils to discover new aspects of barbaric societies.
