La peur dans les illustrations d'albums de littérature jeunesse

Abstract : Fear is part of a child's psychological make-up from an earliest age: it enables him/her to grow up. This dissertation is an attempt to deal with this subject. We focalized on the fear triggered by the illustrations in seven children's books. With the help of the children, we studied the books in order to know how they perceived the terror distilled by some illustrations. Our aim was to find out how the drawing of the pictures caused fear to the children as the story unfolds. Numerous readings on the subject taught us what we should look at to give the correct meaning of a picture. A grid of analysis helped us to probe into the books and find out the different means of causing fear with the illustrations. The children have sharpened their way of looking at things and improved their reading skills and thus arrived at the following conclusion; the colour, the frame, the structure, and the images, all these proved essential to help turn an illustration into something capable of causing fear. Furthermore, through the process the children have also learnt to master their own fears.
