Revue de la littérature sur le niveau de preuve de l’allaitement maternel versus artificiel sur le développement staturo-pondéral du nourrisson

Abstract : Introduction: An adapted food in early life supports growth, motor and cognitive development of infants. Breast-feeding shows a benefit on child development. The level of evidence of this statement stayed unclear. The objective of this study was to conduct a literature review on the level of evidence of exclusive breast-feeding versus formula-feeding on infant growth. Method: This was a systematic review as recommended by the guide PRISMA. The equation of research combining the MeSH terms “Breast Feeding” and “Child Development” was used for the identification of the articles based on Pubmed. After selection of abstracts according to the inclusion criteria, the full versions of eligible articles were subjected to reading. The articles referred in the sources of these studies were added to the analysis. Studies included in the review were divided according to their type, their level of evidence following the criteria of the HAS, and their results. Results: 845 articles were referred (730 on Pubmed, 115 from the bibliography of the eligible articles). 91 were considered eligible. 13 articles were included in the literature review: 1 randomized clinical trial, 10 cohort studies, 2 cross-sectional studies. All studies were level 4 of evidence. Results were heterogeneous on anthropometric variables and results. Many studies did not find any statistically significant difference in weight, height, head circumference and weight-for-height. Conclusion: This review highlighted a lack of quality of the studies, partly due to the lack of randomization, associated with a diversity of results. This makes it impossible to conclude a difference in growth between breast-fed infants and formula-fed infants.
