Analyse du comportement de patients musulmans atteints de pathologies chroniques vis-à-vis de leur traitement pendant le Ramadan : étude observationnelle sur un échantillon de la population musulmane grenobloise porteur de pathologie(s) chronique(s)

Abstract : Every year, approximately 3 million Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan in France. Although elderly and sick people are exempted, many patients insist on fasting despite the risks. This study's purpose was to determine how chronically ill patients change their drug regimen during Ramadan and to evaluate the risks which can arise. A quantitative observational study was conducted on a sample of Grenoble's chronically ill Muslims. 148 surveys were analysed. 69% of the patients had fasted daily during Ramadan whereas 18% chose not to, considering their illness. 80% of the population rearranged their way of taking their treatment. 68% of these drug intake patterns were designed by the patients themselves, 28% following medical advice. Amongst those who fasted daily, 2% of the patients did not change their usual pattern, 82% took their medication at night, 10% reduced their daily doses, 3% took their drugs in a single dose and 3% stopped their medication. A quarter of the patients modified their drug intake in a way considered to be risky. We proved that diabetics were at risk (p<0,01) although they made modifications after medical advice more frequently (p<0,01). Our study highlights the fact that taking medical advice does not lower the risk taken by patients when changing their drug pattern. Either they do not follow this advice, or doctors do not know how to counsel their patients adequately. We encourage the development of education programs to ensure a better information concerning health and Ramadan for healthcare professionals and patients.
