Regards des médecins généralistes de l’agglomération grenobloise sur l’utilité de leur thèse de médecine pour la pratique médicale

Abstract : On an historical level, a medical thesis marks the end of medical studies. Indeed, it is mandatory to obtain the title of Medical Doctor. This discipline - whose definition predicts a wide range of practices where multiple issues intermingle on a daily basis - is only accessible to General Practitioners once they've passed that unavoidable stage. In these conditions, we've asked ourselves how Medical Doctors considered their own medical thesis regarding its utility in their daily practice. We've explored that question through semi-structured individual interviews of MDs - in Grenoble and its surroundings – where we've studied their mental representations. The GPs we interviewed seem to show a genuine attachment to their thesis - even if mixed feelings can sometimes emerge - despite the difficulties they've met in the process of its achievement. That attachment clearly affects their point of view as they describe a very low impact of their thesis on their daily practice. However, a medical thesis seems to be important to them as regards its potential utility to general medecine as a discipline – e.g introduction to research, promotion of general medecine as well as the significance of a rite of passage. Nevertheless, they seem to show great humility towards what their own medical thesis could bring to these different objectives. Medical theses in their actual form seem to be insufficient to reach the objectives mentioned above. Indeed, it would be interesting to reconsider them in substance and in form, or even remove them to give way to more diverse alternatives which would bring better and more appropriate answers to the diversity of what is at stake in this work.
