Le texte dans l’exposition : enjeux et évolutions d’un outil de médiation au service des musées

Abstract : Museums are an omnipresent component of the cultural landscape. The exhibitions they feature enhance a cultural heritage composed of art work and objects of all types. These special places fuel their visitors’ admiration, curiosity and emotional sensitivity. Why is it then that texts are added to these exhibitions? Aren’t the visitors of these museums satisfied solely with the beauty and uniqueness of these pieces? This thesis explores the conditions in which mediation texts are created. We will first position the museums in their socio-cultural environment in order to identify the museology paradigms and attempt to link the mediation documents to these various currents. We will then analyze how the text becomes a mediation tool at the service of the work of art and visitors. Subsequently, we will investigate digital devices to determine whether they are initiating the evolution of mediation tools. Through content analysis and semi structured interviews, we will shed light on the disparity between the usage of mediation texts within an art museum and a society museum, to try to understand how mediation texts can help establish the cultural strategy of museums.
