De l'influence des évènements de vie traumatiques sur le choix d'une carrière médicale : étude descriptive aux Antilles-Guyane

Abstract : “Why do they make medical school?” It comes to a multifactorial decision. Some of the reasons would be to cope with stressful situations even traumatic and the main objective of this study is to determine the exposure level at these traumatic life events (TLE) in the medical population, as well as the influence of these events for becoming a physician. This descriptive study was led between the 1er of december 2014 and the 1er of april 2015, with medical students, first to sixth years, interns, chiefs residents, physicians, across all categories, in West Indies and Guyana. The data collection has been made through an anonymous questionnaire partly consisting of Trauma History Questionnaire (THQ). The main enabler factors identified are the attraction for the science (64,2%), the exercise of humanitary action (55,8%), the need to feel useful (47%), the physician’s good quality of life (32,7%), the interesting financial aspect (30,9%) and the job security (30%) The exposure level to TLE of the study population is 80,9%, and the average number of these real life situations is 2,4. Among the 138 participants mentioning a TLE before they began their course of medicine, 28,7% state that it influenced their choice of career. These people distinguish themselves by a most important knowledge of illness, serious injuries or sudden death of someone close to them. The identification of the TLE and the measures favoring the reflection about their importance and influence in the physician’s life, would probably help him to understand better, to make the right choice for better personal life or while exercing his job, for being able to deal with his patients' difficulties. These events, frequently met and impactants, would merit further consideration than just physiopathologic, because they can lead to positive choice like becoming a physician.
