Association entre niveau d’estime de soi et statut socioéconomique des patients : étude quantitative descriptive par questionnaires auto-administrés en cabinet de médecine générale de la région Rhône-Alpes

Abstract : INTRODUCTION : Social inequalities in health keep on worsening, affecting all social classes and not only precarious ones : they are progressive and do not present any turning point along the "social ladder". The identification of the factors responsible for such inequalities then turns to be a major issue of public health policies. Self-esteem has already been evoked as a possible determinant factor of these inequalities. OBJECTIVE : The objective of our study was to investigate a possible correlation between the level of self-esteem of the patients and their socio-economical status in general medicine. METHODOLOGY : We have performed a quantitative epidemiological study based on a transversal observational, self-filled up survey including the Rosenberg scale for self-esteem evaluation and the DipCare score for evaluating the socio-economical status of general medicine patients in Savoie and Isère. RESULTS : 290 questionnaires have been distributed, 243 have been returned, 203 of those could be analyzed. A relevant, statistically significant link (p< 0.001) has been found between the self-esteem level and the socio-economical level : the lowest the socio-economical level of an individual, the worse the self-esteem level. The women in our study showed a lower self-esteem level than men.
