La contagion des émotions entre professeur et élèves et son incidence sur le cours de la leçon d'EPS

Abstract : This study deals with the importance of emotions in Physical Education lessons, and more especially with the transmission of emotions between the teacher and his students. A Physical Education lesson is made of an accumulation of various intrinsic or extrinsic contraints for the teacher that are difficult to handle sometimes. Therefore, it can lead him/her to make choices that are influenced by an emotional state. Teenager have appropriate skills which make them feel the teacher’s emotional state and it can change their behavior. To carry out this study, we use the conceptualization in a situation, in order to compare the observable activity with the students and teacher’s awareness, their thoughts and their feelings. We used video recording during a lesson as an interview material between the teacher and the students. Some students watched the video and were then asked to comment upon what happened in their mind, their thoughts, their feelings during every moment of the lesson. The objective led to the students’ pre-reflective self-awareness in order to make a link between the observable activity and the intrinsic activity and to show the importance of emotional tension in the students’ decisionmaking and behavior. Most likely, the results show that there is a spreading of emotions which works both ways: on the one hand the origin comes from the students who consciously lead the teacher to use them in order to regulate and adjust situations according to the emotional behavior that he can observe. On the other hand, the origin comes from the teacher, who is subjected to stressing contraints which surround him and which sometimes can lead to an important emotion that the students can feel. Thus, it can change their behavior in various ways depending on the kind of students he teaches. As a conclusion, we can say that these results question the relevance of the initial education in relation to the dynamic aspect of a Physical Education lesson faced with the adaptability skills that the teachers must show. After all, this analysis is probably at the origin of the difficulties encountered by young teachers contrary to the caricatures that are painted about novice and experienced teachers.
