Évolution de l’image et de la pratique des sages-femmes : un nouvel équilibre à trouver ?

Abstract : The midwife image has evolved over time and history. It reflects the two faces of this profession, skills expected from the parents for the birth of their child : medical and technical skills and human support. Today, the medicalization of birth, rationalization of care and the increasing workload sometimes force the midwife to abandon the relational side of her work, yet relayed in images of the past, as a fundamental element of the profession. In this context, maintaining the balance between the two sides becomes difficult. But this goal can be achieved if the institution, the medical team and the midwife herself approach together an ethical reflection process by reconsidering childbirth as a natural act without jeopardizing safety.
