Les couches difficiles et l’arrivée des hommes sur la scène de l’accouchement (1580-1789)

Abstract : The purpose of this work is to understand how men could have a place in obstetric. We read three midwives’ books and three surgeons’ books. The dynamic between these books shows that midwives have been able to develop their methods but surgeons had deeper knowledge. Plus, there were only a few well-trained midwives. These two centuries were just the beginning of transformations around women in labour, which led to medicalization during the 19th century.
