Prise en charge et prévention de l'ostéoporose en 2015 : quel rôle pour le pharmacien d'officine ?

Abstract : Osteoporosis is a chronic and silent disease, characterized by a decrease of density and bone resistance, predisposing patients to a greater risk of fractures. Osteoporosis is a major public health problem because of its important and increasing prevalence and because of its consequences in terms of morbidity, mortality and socioeconomic costs. Osteoporosis remains in spite of reliable diagnostic a sub-diagnosed pathology both in the current medical practice and after a bone fracture. Osteoporosis also remains an insufficiently handled pathology. Only a part of the patients relevant for a treatment, are managed. Finally, osteoporosis is a pathology the prevention of which is insufficient both as regards the development of the disease as its consequences. The pharmacist is a healthcare professional who occupies a specific position in the healthcare path due to frequent contacts with patients. Thus, we can imagine a significant role for the pharmacist for optimizing the management of osteoporotic patients. Pharmacist could inform patients about this disease, detect patient with high risks, and participate to sessions of therapeutic education.
