Les mutilations sexuelles féminines‎ : où en sommes-nous ? Enquête prospective en Haute-Normandie auprès de 195 sages-femmes

Abstract : Widely perpetrated, female genital mutilation is a violation of the physical and moral integrity of women. With 130 million women concerned and 30 million women who face a risk of being mutilated by 2050, governments and international authorities have deemed it a major topic of public health in terms of prevention. The whole professionals of law, education, and association must be a part of this prevention process. This is also the case for health professionals, including midwives. As Upper Normandy is France's second must affected region, this survey dealt with midwives' investment in this region, from a point of view of management and prevention of female genital mutilation. The interest was to determine the means used to fight this practice, and then the use of such means by midwives. 550 questionnaires were sent for 201 questionnaires received (195 analyzable, 6 excluded), ending up with a response rate of 35.4%. If 72% of midwives have already been confronted with female genital mutilation, over a third of them (33.6%) have not adapted their management. 55.9% have not received any previous information about it during their continuing vocational training in spite of their work on an exposed area, and 81% do not know any national association dedicated to fight the phenomenon. A lot of efforts still need to be made to prevent this practice.
