Anticiper la transmission des exploitations pour assurer le renouvellement des générations en agriculture. Étude de cas de l'intercommunalité de Provence-Verdon

Abstract : The French general agricultural census of 2010 highlights the fundamental challenge generation change in the agriculture sector. This paper aim at identifying sectors with specifics issues to help policymakers in gearing their policies to maintain farming. To achieve this, we integrated multiple scientific data : (1) data from the land market to understand the context in which land pressure settle in, (2) mapmaking which show the proportion of wastelands and finally (3) a farm survey to find out each farmer’s project of transfer of farming operation. The main results indicate that specifics sectors can be identified by combining these data. In context of land pressure resulting from more or less heightened competition for access to farmlands. In this case, public policies must implement measures to ensure security and preservation of agricultural land. On the contrary, in the context of agricultural decline, public policies should ease the generational transition in agriculture by maintaining the number of active farmers and thus boosting the local economy. Survey analysis didn’t identify a trend except a linear relationship between a farmer without a project of transfer of farming operation and the desire to sell their farms in the absence of any other choices. This study allows characterizing the existing. The low number of survey respondents is a limitation of the study. Nevertheless, this approach is essential for creating awareness of these issues among agricultural stakeholders and to help them on the deployment of specific action plans.
