Impact du stage « découverte » en médecine générale mis en place à la Réunion en 2013/2014 chez les étudiants de DFGSM3 vis-à-vis de la médecine générale

Abstract : Background: To early introduce students to general practice during their medical studies, a clerkship "discovery" of five half-days has established, in Reunion Island, since 2013, for the third year medical students (DFGSM3). This study was designed to evaluate the impact of this clerkship to students of DFGSM3 about the general practice in terms of opinion, satisfaction and knowledge skills of the general practitioner. Methods: This was a descriptive, prospective study based on a qualitative and quantitative sequential mixed method. An opinion survey was conducted before and after the clerkship, for students of DFGSM3 from Reunion, during the 2013/2014 year. Following a focus group of 9 students, a verbatim analysis allowed the development of an identical questionnaire pre and post clerkship and proposed to 83 students of DFGSM3. A satisfaction survey was also proposed. Results: 60 students had answered by pre-clerkship and 77 post-clerkship. The students had discovered the specialty and the profession of the general practitioner. Their vision of general practice has improved positively both in the practice of general medicine (p <0.0001), its diversity, the doctor-patient relationship (p <0.0001), ambulatory exercise, the image (p <0.0001) and quality of life of the general practitioner (p <0.0001). The clerkship was appreciated with “very good” rating by 83.4% of students. The 6 skills of the work were spontaneously discussed by students. Conclusion: The clerkship “discovery”, still underdeveloped, had a positive impact on the vision of DFGSM3 students for general practice. This clerkship of first cycle was appreciated and conducive to an approach to primary care and the ambulatory sector, ignored by students, despite his precocity in medical studies.
