L’interaction orale et la collaboration entre les élèves en classe de langue

Abstract : I am studying this year how to become an English teacher. During the school-year 2014-2015, I did a block-release training. I was teaching and still studying how to teach. Confronting pupils for the first time is always challenging. Our pupils are supposed to communicate and interact in a language class and the teacher is supposed to step aside as much as possible. But how is it supposed to work if the students refuse to get out of their group of friends? Indeed, one the classes I had was composed of many groups or clans. Spreading interaction within the whole class was not easy to do. Furthermore, the pupils didn’t listen to each other. Consequently, I have worked on several hypotheses to sort these problems out and to improve collaboration within this class. Using several tools like self-assessment grids, assessment grids to evaluate the classmates or a questionnaire, I tried different working methods. The collected data was essential to determine the pupils’ behavior before and after the different devices were used. Thus, listening to each other is much more efficient if all the pupils have a precise task to do while listening. Furthermore, if we want group work to be effective and to trigger cooperation within the entire class, we need to form the groups ourselves. Mastering some teaching devices is essential to make the pupils collaborate. But you won’t succeed without patience and smiles.
