Impacts de couverts permanents de légumineuses sur les composantes de rendement et sur la nutrition azotée d'une culture de blé d'hiver

Abstract : Nowadays, agriculture is very reliant on the inputs brought in the field. Legume living mulches are considered as an alternative. It provides an improvement of the soil structure, a weed control and a supply of nitrogen to the crop. However, the living mulch presents some risks of competition on the crop. Some ways can reduce these risks : an appropriate sowing, the nitrogen fertilisation and the chemical or mechanical suppression of the living mulch. This MSc Thesis aims to synthesize 6 trials where living mulch were studied. The legume were managed differently between trials : species of the legume, suppression or destruction of living mulch etc. Despite the heterogeneity of the factors studied, this synthesis makes a review of the consequences of the living mulch on winter wheat and brings out the principles of an optimal management of the system. The suppresion of the living mulch is the key of the success of this technique. In most of the trials, the effect of the legume seems to be linked to the nitrogen status of the crop. Maximizing the living mulch’s biomass at the end of winter while minimizing it at the flowering of wheat seems to be the kinetic of production of biomass that gives the best yield. The biomass at the flowering shall not be higher than 1 tDM/ha but the total destruction of the living mulch does not seem to be necessary. These recommendations, to be confirmed, enable a reduction of the competition on the crop and an improvement of the nitrogen supply to the crop.
