Master Thesis

Patrimoine et design, dilemme au coeur du renouvellement urbain stéphanois ?

Abstract : This master's thesis studies the relationship between the industrial heritage and the new image design that the city of Saint‐Etienne wants. The dilemma between these two concepts is studied through the various projects of urban renewal in the Jacquard area, in the city centre, and in the industrial area of the Manufacture d'Armes of Saint‐Etienne. This master's thesis aims at clarifying the conflict between these two sides of Saint‐Etienne's policy. These notions, seemingly opposed but associated as well, are meant to coexist in the urban renewal process. Heritage may be outdated, but has to be preserved for its worth, design however stands for innovation, modernity and novelty for the city's reputation. Projects are used to study the resources used for these two concepts, as their relationships. The aim of this master's thesis is to establish whether they lead to a dilemma, namely to take a decisive choice for one or the other, or whether a cohabitation, indeed a support between these two concepts is possible for the same project.
