Tempérament affectif et alcoolodépendance : différences hommes-femmes

Abstract : Context: In general population, there are differences of distribution of the affective temperaments, described by Akiskal, between men and women. To our knowledge, no study explored these differences in populations of subjects with an alcohol use disorder. After a review of the literature centred on three axes: 1) temperament and alcohol use disorder, 2) alcohol use disorder and gender differences and 3) temperament and gender differences, we made a clinical trial. Methods: all the subjects consulting successively for an alcohol use disorder between July, 2014 and March, 2015 at the department of Addictologie of the hospital Sainte-Anne (Paris) were included in the study (n=118 ). A group of women (n=54) was compared with a group of men (n=64) by means of the auto-questionnaire TEMPS-A, exploring five sub-scales of the affective temperament: 1) cyclothymic, 2) depressive, 3) irritable, 4) hyperthymic and 5) anxious. Both groups were compared with a control population (n=3807). Results: the average score in the anxious sub-scale was higher in the group of women (score=1,74) compared with the group of men (score=1,22 ) (Test-t=2,66, p=0,009). There were no significant differences between the patients not depressed and controls to all the sub-scales. Conclusions: the women with alcohol use disorder would present more frequently an anxious temperament than the men. The depression could represent a confounding factor in the link found before between depressive temperament and alcohol use disorder.
