Art dentaire en préhistoire : état des connaissances et reconstitution expérimentale

Abstract : Like all organs, teeth are the site of various diseases, sources of discomfort or even great suffering for the affected individuals. These phenomena are not new and they have existed since the early evolution of our species, although it now seems that their incidence has greatly increased during the modern period, at least as regards carious pathologies. Similarly, certain practices of ritual mutilation or ornamentation show that our ancestors have long paid much attention to their teeth, a symbolic and aesthetic perspective. Recent work reported on the manipulation teeth interpreted as the first attempts to care. These Prehistoric interventions on dental organ involve the implementation of complex cognitive processes associated with manual dexterity. The results we have obtained underline the influence many parameters that are the optimization of the instrument, the teeth concerned and their initial state, anatomy of the patient, the dexterity of the operator and the operative position. If it is possible to perform Dental occlusal trepanation on dentinal using a stone cut and drill a drill bow, it remains to determine why they were made, and in the present state of knowledge, we can not conclude formally whether curative care.
