Évolution et lien entre burnout et empathie au cours des deux premières années d’internat de médecine générale

Abstract : Objectives : Burnout syndrome affect more than half of interns, and it seems that emphathy decreases during the course of medical studies. The objective of this study is to follow the progression of burnout syndrome and empathy during the first two years of the general medical internship and to study the link which exists between these two variables. Method : A longitudinal study with a cohort of 558 residents of general medicine from Ile de France starting from May 2013 (6 months from the start of their residency) until November 2014. They fill in an online questionnaire for each of the six months which focuses on socio-demographic and professional factors. It also measures burnout with the help of the MBI, and empathy with the help of the JSPE. Results : The answers of 157 interns, who responded to at least two of the phases of study, have been analysed. Of the three aspects of burnout, only personal fufilment improved by any significant measure (p=0,009). Regarding empathy overall score (p = 0.007) and size perspective taking (p = 0.012) it increased significantly during the first two years of residency. Our study has confirmed the existence of a correlation between empathy and burnout, but it has not shown evidence of causality. Conclusion : Learning more about empathy and the link with burnout could allow us to help students to develop empathy in a particular way in order to reduce burnout syndrome and improve their medical practice.
