L'approche des médecines alternatives et complémentaires lors du stage ambulatoire de médecine générale : le point de vue des maîtres de stage des universités

Abstract : Background: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has never been more popular. However, in France, CAM is briefly or not at all addressed in medical education curricula. Residents are confronted with CAM during field training in general practice (GP). Objective: To understand how academic field training supervisors (AFS) approach CAM with residents. Method: A qualitative study using thirteen semi-structured interviews with AFS from Grenoble university medical school. Results: AFS are delivering a personal and heterogeneous message to resident about CAM. Yet CAM provides AFS with the opportunity to touch complex issues with residents such as the doctor-patient relationship and holistic care Several factors are impacting this message: - individual to the AFS (CAM knowledge, experience, perception); - inherent to the academic environment (interest in CAM by faculty members and other AFS); - matching the resident’s own interest; - depending on the patient. Conclusion: AFS cannot disregard CAM which is frequently encountered in general medical practice. GP trainees should receive more consistent information on CAM, in particular based on scientific evidence, in order to give their patients a thoughtful opinion and balanced advice. It is suggested that the faculty should discuss the introduction of CAM education in the medical curriculum.
