Critères de choix du système implantaire par les odontologistes : enquête auprès des chirurgiens dentistes de la région bordelaise

Abstract : Introduction: Implant-supported rehabilitation is a therapeutic of choice for tooth loss’ treatment. There is an increase in the number of implants placed annually and a generalization of the practice of implantology. In addition, the number of implants manufacturers increases and the quantity of implants available for practitioners as well. If there are scientific and clinical recommendations trends, there is for now no scientific or clinical evidence showing the superiority of one implant system over its competitors which can objectively inform the choice of the practitioner. From this context, we were interested to know what are the criteria of choice of the implant system by implantologists. Methods: Conception of a questionnaire for the dentists practicing implantology, establishing their professional profile and asking them about their criteria of choice of their dental implant system. After a phone solicitation, we sent our questionnaire to 105 practitioners (19 letters, 86 emails). 53 responses were received (50,5%). Results: We got a sample of dentists with diverse professional profiles, either in the number of implants placed annually (minimum=15 implants, maximum= 450 implants), or in their duration of exercise in implantology (from less than 5 years to more of 20 years), and using various systems (13 different manufacturers). Dentists agreed on the importance of several criteria involved in choosing their dental implant system: brand image (87%), the clinical experience available on the system (100%), the variety of implants and prosthetics supports available on the system (100%), the price (91%), logistics set up by the manufacturer (95%) and the relation with the medical representative (95%). Other criteria depend more on each dentists: the presence of a screw extraction kit supplied by the manufacturer (40% important, 60% not important), the trainings offered by manufacturer (45% important, 55% not important). Only the compatibility with other system s does not seem important (83%). Discussion: Given the low response rate and the many possible bias, our study does not allow us to conclude. However, despite sensitivity of each dentist, some criteria seem decisive in the choice of dental implant system by odontologists, and do not depend of their professional profile.
