Dépérissement de la mâche (Valerianella locusta) en région nantaise : étiologie du dépérissement, caractérisation des Pythiacées impliquées et recherche de premières options de protection

Abstract : Lamb’s lettuce Valerianella locusta (L.) Laterr. is the most important crop cultivated in the area of Nantes. However, since winter 2009, market gardeners have been confronted with lamb’s lettuce decline. Preliminary studies indicated that Pythium species were involved, which was confirmed by the assays carried out and described in this report. We can even assume that it is not a single species, but a complex of several ones, that is involved in the decline phenomenon. Pythium violae, Pythium irregulare and a third species yet to be characterised seem likely to be responsible given their frequency and pathogenicity. Also, some preliminary control measures against these Pythium species were tested. Pythium oligandrum, which is already used as a biocontrol agent on other crops, seems to be a possible solution. A phytosanitary solution can also be considered, but only by the means of seed coating using metalaxyl in order to prevent damping-off symptoms. Still, no species tested here showed any signs of resistance.
