Study of the origin of the heterogeneity of the germinative quality in fennel seed production (Foeniculum vulgare Mill. var. azoricum Tell.)

Abstract : The production of fennel hybrid seeds (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum) is subjected to criteria of sanitary quality and high germination faculty. For the Bejo company, the germination faculty has to be at least 90% to allows the seed lot to be marketed. However, these last years, the results of germination quality and yield were heterogeneous, without any notable trend that can explain these differences. The control of the technical itinerary is needed to meet these quality requirements and include in particular an optimal date of harvest to ensure good germination. Nonetheless, the understanding of mechanisms and factors involved in the acquisition of the germination faculty are unknown. The aims of this study are therefore to bring knowledge about the dynamic of fennel seed maturation and to understand the causes of the heterogeneity of the germination quality.
