« Et sinon, il va s'appeler comment ? » : le choix et l'importance du prénom

Abstract : After having researched the history of first names for the last hundred years along with its function and further impact on one's social life, we were driven to ask ourselves what factors came into consideration in the process of choosing a name and to what extent this choice could influence the newborn's self-construction. We've conducted a multi centered prospective study by administrating a thirty seven questions survey through social media. We've collected 1038 validated questionnaires in a two months' time. We've realized a statistical analysis which have allowed us to transform the data into genuine information. Despite the fact that we had a lack of balance among the responding population, (most of them being between the age of 19 to 34) several observation came out of the study. For most people, the choice of first name is a well thought out action, indeed 75.8% of said population don't have children yet but have already thought their future names through. 31,9% do have children who had their names chosen long before they were born. Exactly 67% of answering population actually like their first name and among them 75% know how and why it was chosen. Finally, 87,6% of asked population believe their name is a match with their personality. This shows to what extent someone's first name takes part into the construction of a self-identity and self-perception. Lastly, we've detected several evolutions among the six generations we have studied which allow us to say it's an ever changing topic.
