La reformulation au cycle 1

Abstract : Spoken language skills are at the heart of pre-school training. Children's literature provides a precious tool for enriching language skills. Pupils can be encouraged to reformulate a story in their own words. I set out to analyse the syntax, the vocabulary and the grammar of the reformulations chosen by seventeen pupils of senior kindergarden. The chosen reformulations that either repeated the initial text verbatum, reformulated but changed the meaning, or paraphrased the story accurately provided a clear demonstration of their command of the spoken language. During the retelling of the story, the teacher’s interventions are precious in helping pupils improve their mastery of the spoken language.
