Une correspondance familiale lors de l'expatriation d'un enseignant en Haute-Volta, en 1945 : le rôle du père

Abstract : The discovery of about a hundred letters, mainly written or received between 1931 and 1949, with several photos and drawings included, allowed to highlight about thirty letters standing out thanks to heir content. However, others mails from the following years are also really interesting. These letters, sent by plane from different locations, are still for the most of them with their stamped envelope. Indeed, these letters are written by an husband, Jean-André Vergnes, travelling to Ouagadougou (Upper Volta at the time and now Burkina Faso) to his wife born under the name of Brigida Bilbao y Bilbao, spouse of Vergnes. who remained in Agent (France, Lot-et-Garonne), from his departure in November 1945 to the arrival of the whole family about the end of February 1946. We assume the date of arrival to be at end of February as there is no other mail after the 19th of February and as another exchange of letters begins in 1948, at the time of another family separation..At the end of the second World War, France had to reorganize its colonies and, in order to do that, the ministries offered several positions to its mainland French Civil servant. But there was already an existing network in French West Africa (AOF) for the newly arrived Civil Servants. Expatriation is a complicated adventure, regarding to the psychological and logistical areas, and becomes even more complicated when done in Family. In this exchange of family letters, the father, away from his family for several months, from 1945 to 1946. depicts his travel and future place of living. But we can also see his constant concern to organize from far away the daily lives of his wife and children, who are facing important difficulties (delay of bank transfers, postal delays, rising food prices,...) While reading these letters, we note that, even if we miss the answers, despite absence and distance, the father keeps his role and place in the family as an educator, a manager and a protector.
